Restitution for Patients Harmed by Dr. Mona Ghosh
Attorneys Helping Patients Recover Compensation for Unnecessary Medical Treatment
When doctors or other medical providers fail to protect the health and well-being of patients, they may be held responsible for the injuries they have caused. While many medical malpractice cases involve mistakes made by doctors or other medical professionals or other forms of negligent care, there are some situations where doctors may take intentional actions that can put the health of patients at risk. One of the most egregious examples of this form of medical malpractice in recent history involved Dr. Mona Ghosh, who committed multiple forms of health care fraud and provided unnecessary medical treatments to patients at a women's health care clinic in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
After an extensive investigation by the FBI into Dr. Ghosh's practices, she was charged with health care fraud, and in June of 2025, she was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Her sentence also included the requirement to pay restitution to address the effects of the fraud she committed. Patients who were harmed by the treatment they received from Dr. Ghosh will need to understand how this restitution may affect them and what options they may have for recovering compensation. At Birth Injury Law Alliance, Ltd., we are representing many patients of Dr. Ghosh, and we can help ensure that they will be able to address the effects of the unnecessary treatment they received. What Is Restitution?
When someone is convicted of a crime, their sentence may not only involve prison time and fines paid to the government, but they may also be required to pay restitution. These payments are meant to address the effects of their offenses, compensating the parties who have suffered financial losses or other forms of harm. In Dr. Mona Ghosh's case, her sentence included the requirement to pay restitution of approximately $1.5 million. This restitution is meant to address the amount of money that Dr. Ghosh received through fraudulent billing and other methods. It will be paid to insurance companies to compensate them for the losses they experienced due to Dr. Ghosh's health care fraud.
While the restitution in this case may address the fraud that was committed, it does not provide compensation for patients who were affected by Dr. Ghosh's illegal activities. However, patients and their families may have other options for obtaining compensation.
Recovering Compensation Through Civil Lawsuits
When providing treatment to patients at Progressive Women's Healthcare, S.C., Dr. Ghosh engaged in multiple forms of medical malpractice, including performing treatments that were not medically necessary. These included unnecessary endometrial ablations and endometrial biopsies, as well as blood work, tests for sexually transmitted diseases, ultrasounds, and vaccinations. Numerous patients were affected by these unnecessary treatments, with some patients becoming infertile.
Patients who have suffered harm due to medical malpractice can file civil lawsuits against the providers who were responsible. This can help ensure that patients will receive financial compensation that will address the damages they have suffered. Compensation may cover the costs of additional medical treatment needed to address the ongoing health issues patients have experienced. It can also address other financial losses, including any lost income when patients were recovering from the treatments they received. Patients may also be compensated for the personal effects of medical malpractice, including their physical pain and the emotional trauma resulting from mistreatment by Dr. Ghosh, infertility, or other problems they have experienced.
