Of Counsel

Attorney & Clinical Expert in Obstetrics, Nursing, and Birth Injury Advocacy

Lisa Miller brings to the Birth Injury Alliance an extraordinary combination of clinical and legal expertise. As both a Certified Nurse Midwife and an attorney, she bridges the worlds of medicine and law with uncommon depth, insight, and compassion. Her career spans more than four decades of experience in obstetric care, medical education, and perinatal risk management — all with a focus on improving outcomes for woman and neonates.

Clinical and Academic Background

Lisa began her professional career as a registered nurse and advanced to become a certified nurse midwife, providing care to mothers and newborns across diverse clinical settings. Her early practice experience evolved into leadership roles in education and clinical training.

She served as a Clinical Instructor for the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Champaign–Urbana and later as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, where she directed an academic midwifery service. In these roles, Lisa trained future physicians, nurses, and midwives in evidence-based labor management, fetal monitoring, and the principles of safe, patient-centered maternity care.

Throughout her academic and clinical career, Lisa became widely recognized for her expertise in electronic fetal monitoring, team communication, and human factors in obstetric safety. She has lectured nationally on improving perinatal outcomes through enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration and has authored numerous educational resources, including Mosby’s Pocket Guide to Fetal Monitoring: A Multidisciplinary Approach, a trusted reference for clinicians across the United States.

Legal Experience and Role in Birth Injury Advocacy

Motivated by a desire to strengthen accountability and improve maternal and neonatal safety, Lisa pursued a law degree and began applying her clinical insight to the practice of birth injury and medical malpractice law.

At the Birth Injury Alliance, she plays an integral role in case development and litigation strategy, helping families uncover the truth behind preventable injuries in labor and delivery. Her work includes:

  • Clinical and Expert Review: Evaluating medical records, identifying deviations from obstetric standards, and translating complex data into clear, persuasive findings.
  • Case and Trial Support: Preparing expert witnesses, analyzing testimony, and consulting on fetal monitoring and labor management issues central to obstetric negligence cases.
  • Educational Leadership: Helping the firm stay current on emerging obstetric guidelines, patient safety research, and clinical best practices that inform litigation and policy reform.

A Bridge Between Medicine and Law

Lisa’s unique dual background gives her the rare ability to interpret both the medical reasoning behind obstetric decisions and the legal implications of substandard care. She understands the realities of clinical practice — the pressures, hierarchies, and systems that shape outcomes — and uses that understanding to advocate for families seeking justice after catastrophic injuries.

Her work reflects a lifelong commitment to improving perinatal safety, advancing patient advocacy, and ensuring that every case she touches contributes not only to accountability but also to systemic change in maternal and newborn care.
